Finding the Right Xbox Controller

Every Xbox console ships with a standard wireless controller, but there’s a whole range of options depending on your budget and what you need. From the standard pad to the pro-level Elite, plus budget wired alternatives and useful accessories — here’s what’s available.

Xbox Wireless Controller (Standard)

The default Xbox controller. It’s the one that comes in the box with every Series X and Series S, and it’s genuinely excellent — comfortable ergonomics, textured grips, hybrid D-pad, USB-C, Bluetooth, and the share button for captures. Up to 40 hours on AA batteries.

Works with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, Android, iOS, and even Fire TV Sticks and some smart TVs.

Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

The premium option for competitive and serious gamers. The Elite Series 2 adds adjustable-tension thumbsticks, swappable components (D-pads, thumbstick toppers, back paddles), shorter hair trigger locks, wrap-around rubberised grips, and a built-in rechargeable battery with up to 40 hours life.

You can save three custom profiles directly on the controller and switch between them on the fly — no app needed mid-game.

Elite Series 2 (Full Kit)

The full package with carrying case, charging dock, USB-C cable, and the complete set of swappable components (4 thumbstick toppers, 2 D-pads, 4 paddles).

Elite Series 2 — Core Edition

Same controller internals as the full Elite, but ships with just the essentials — no carrying case, no charging dock, no extra paddles or thumbstick toppers. You can buy the component pack separately later if you want them. Great way to get into the Elite at a lower price.

Xbox Adaptive Controller

Designed for gamers with limited mobility. The Adaptive Controller features large programmable buttons and connects to external switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks to make gaming more accessible. It’s a genuinely important product.

Budget & Third-Party Controllers

Don’t want to spend £50+ on an official controller? These wired alternatives do the job at a fraction of the price. They sacrifice wireless and some premium feel, but they’re perfectly functional for casual gaming or as a second/third controller.

Controller Compatibility

All current Xbox controllers work across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC. The newer models (2020 onwards) also support Bluetooth for Android, iOS, and some smart TVs. The Elite Series 2 and standard wireless controllers are the most versatile — wired third-party pads are limited to USB connections only.
